CNN contributor Van Jones sat down with a trio of black Trump voters to find out why they chose to support the president and what they think of his second term.
One man explained he was previously a Democrat but Trump’s “authenticity” was appealing, affectionately saying, “Part of it is he’s an asshole.”
Another ex-Democrat said her eyes were opened by conservative commentator Candace Owens, who made her question media lies about who Trump “really was.”
A second Trump-supporting woman explained that after voting against him in 2016, she voted for Trump in 2020 because she “was pleasantly surprised,” and “was pleased with what was happening” to the U.S. under his leadership.
“I saw the economy getting better. I saw country relations in certain countries getting better,” she told Jones.
Seth Dawkins, the man who was drawn to Trump’s “authenticity,” said he specifically supports Trump’s border policies.
Jones then tried to question the interviewees about the president allegedly taking down Harriet Tubman’s pictures “for a quick minute” and supposedly trying to “knock out the black museums.”
Dawkins refused to take the bait and told the CNN commentator, “I care more about how I’m going to take care of my children.”
Again trying to push a racial narrative on the Trump voters, Jones said, “Under the Trump and Biden administration, they came to certain agreements with police departments to be less brutal toward the black community. Trump has now ended all that,” asking, “How does that help the black community?”
One of the women answered by explaining she has “a lot of issues with police reform and just with how police officers are treated as a whole,” noting her husband “is currently going through the process to become a police office.”
“The amount of hatred that cops get, even the best ones, I think, has become a huge problem. Because it has been, especially around election times, when it definitely comes out of, like, ‘Oh no, the cops are bad. The cops hate you because you’re black.’ They’re immediately deemed as evil,” she added.
Next, Jones said, “This man [Trump] is talking about running for a third term. What do you think about that?”
The Trump voters explained to Jones that Trump is messing with Democrats and media members who claimed he was going to become a dictator, saying his comments about a third term are “a prime example of him trolling people.”
All three individuals told Jones they do not regret their decisions to support Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign and are happy with the administration.
