The BBC recently obtained a smartphone from North Korea that shows the draconian measures the nation’s dictator Kim Jong Un has unleashed on his citizens.
The cellular devices do not have internet access and block users from using certain South Korean words and phrases.
One example of the phones altering language is that when North Koreans type the word “Oppa,” which is “Older Brother” in Korean but “boyfriend” in South Korean, the word is automatically switched to “comrade.”
The word for “South Korea” switches to the phrase “puppet state.”
The outlet noted South Korea is currently engaged in a campaign where they’re smuggling films, TV shows and music into North Korea to show citizens the differences between the two nations and the disturbing lack of freedom under Jong Un’s regime.
Every five minutes, the phones take a screenshot of the user’s device and store them in an app that the government has access to but the owner cannot mess with.
The insane censorship is alarming, but while Westerners decry the lack of freedom they often ignore their own governments which are arresting people for silently praying outside abortion clinics and posting memes online.
If they were being honest, many North American and European governments would love to engage in similar information gatekeeping if they were able.
It’s possible the Western world is closer to living in a similarly dystopian society than many people realize.
