A “scoop” by Politico on Elon Musk’s imminent departure from the Trump White House quickly fizzled following a fact check by Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
On Wednesday, Politico editor Rachael Bade claimed Musk, the DOGE lead who’d agreed to leave the Trump admin as a “special government employee” after 130 days, was departing because he’d become a political liability to Trump, overriding protocol, bypassing chain of command procedures and posting off-brand social media messages, despite the president’s public praise.
Bade claimed Trump insiders were wary of Musk after a stinging setback in Wisconsin Tuesday, where a Democrat won a Supreme Court seat in a special election despite Musk vociferously campaigning for the opponent.
Musk’s looming retreat comes as some Trump administration insiders and many outside allies have become frustrated with his unpredictability and increasingly view the billionaire as a political liability, a dynamic that was thrown into stark relief Tuesday when a conservative judge Musk vocally supported lost his bid for a Wisconsin Supreme Court seat by 10 points.
It also represents a stark shift in the Trump-Musk relationship from a month ago, when White House officials and allies were predicting Musk was “here to stay” and that Trump would find a way to blow past the 130-day time limit.
Within minutes of Politico’s story being published, White House Press Sec. Karoline Leavitt had a response, labeling the news item “garbage.”
“This ‘scoop’ is garbage,” Leavitt wrote on X. “Elon Musk and President Trump have both *publicly* stated that Elon will depart from public service as a special government employee when his incredible work at DOGE is complete.”
The exchange comes as Trump was asked about Musk’s imminent departure on Monday, responding the entrepreneur has to return to running his various companies, saying, “At some point, he’s going to be going back. I think he’s amazing… I’d keep him as long as I could keep him. He’s a very talented guy.”
“I love very smart people, and he’s very smart, and he’s done a good job … I like high IQ people. At some point, Elon’s going to want to go back to his company,” Trump added.
Politico’s hit piece attempting to drive a wedge between Trump and Musk follows major wins for the latter’s SpaceX company, which on Wednesday successfully orbited the South Pole after rescuing NASA astronauts last month left stranded in space by the Biden administration.
