President Donald Trump reacted to pal Elon Musk’s recent criticisms of his “big, beautiful” bill during an Oval Office press conference Wednesday, saying that while parts of the legislation must still be negotiated, it’s imperative it passes.
“We have to get a lot of votes, we can’t be cutting – we need to get a lot of support,” Trump told reporters, taking questions following a swear-in ceremony for Jeanine Pirro to serve as interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.
“We will be negotiating that bill. I’m not happy about certain aspects of it, but I’m thrilled by other aspects of it,” Trump said. “That’s the way [it] goes, it’s very big, it’s the big beautiful bill, but the beautiful is because all of the things we have, the biggest thing being I would say the level of tax-cutting that we’re gonna be doing.”
“We’re going to make people really be able to…We’ll have one of the…We’ll have the lowest tax rate we’ve ever had in the history of our country — and tremendous amount of benefit are going to the middle-income people of our country – low- and middle-income people of our country.”
The president’s response came as Musk over the weekend remarked he was upset the spending package, estimated to add $3.8 trillion to the national debt, would essentially negate the cuts his Department of Government Efficiency had made.
“I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decreases it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing,” Musk told CBS Sunday Morning.
“I think a bill can be big or it can be beautiful, but I don’t know if it can be both,” he added. “My personal opinion.”
The minor disagreement has provided the salivating media an opportunity to pounce, all too eager to drive a wedge between Trump and Musk.
Meanwhile, a federal judge late Tuesday approved a DOGE team’s access to a sensitive Treasury Department database handling trillions in payments, known as the Bureau of the Fiscal Service, an entity that “essentially serves as the checkbook for the federal government,” according to ABC News.
