The German Social Democrats (SPD) want to bring in 500,000 immigrations a year, give non-German migrants the right to vote, and make sure that deportations are only a “very last resort.”

According to details leaked by the German media, the party not only opposes tougher measures on migration but intends to speed up the influx of migrants.

The SPD are preparing to hold talks on forming a government with the centre-right CDU/CSU alliance which won the elections on February 23rd.

CDU leader Friedrich Merz has already caved in to many of the SPD’s demands, thereby breaking his campaign promise to bring in tougher measures on migration, including closing Germany’s borders to illegal and undocumented migrants.

He has also backtracked on his promise to revoke a law introduced by the outgoing left-liberal cabinet that makes it easier for migrants to attain German citizenship.

It is also indicative of the new government’s approach to migration that the SPD said it wants to see “more immigration success stories.”

But the Social Democrats are still not content and want to go even further by specifically advocating for pro-migration policies. This comes despite a spate of knife crimes, murders, and terror attacks committed by migrants in recent months that have angered German voters.

The proposals that the SPD will bring to the negotiating table on forming a coalition with the CDU/CSU include:

  • welcoming 500,000 immigrants a year to address demographic and labour shortage problems;
  • giving migrants without German citizenship the right to vote if they have lived in Germany for a certain amount of time;
  • allowing rejected asylum seekers who should be deported to stay in Germany by giving them a “perspective”—a chance to find work and integrate into society (in total, there are currently about 220,000 people who are obliged to leave the country);
  • making it government policy that deportations should only be considered as a “very last resort,” and only resorting to expulsions in the case of repeat offenders or the repeated abuse of the asylum laws.

The SPD’s plans provide clear evidence that they remain a strongly pro-migration party and are ready to bring in more migrants to Germany whom they see as potential left-wing voters.

As we recently reported, left-wing parties would have received nearly 70% of the votes at the national elections if only Muslims had participated.

Although the SPD’s proposals will likely be countered by Friedrich Merz and his negotiating team, the CDU/CSU will have to reach some sort of compromise if it wishes to gain power. Drastically softening their anti-immigration stance seems like a certainty.
