Aides to ex-President Joe Biden “aggressively” told Democrat donors they were making a huge mistake by dropping support for him following his bungled debate with Donald Trump, warning they would be left with Kamala Harris — who “no one wants.”
The Biden team’s blistering remarks about his successor appear in an upcoming book titled, “Fight: Inside the Wildest Battle for the White House,” authored by NBC News’ Jonathan Allen and The Hill writer Amie Parnes, which gives insight into his campaign’s struggle to maintain his presidential bid amid mounting pressure for him to step aside after his debate with Trump went sideways.
As calls grew for Biden to halt his re-election bid, aides “frantically push[ed] back in phone calls and in text messages, accusing donors of promoting their own agendas at the expense of Biden, the party, and the country,” according to an excerpt from the book.
“One donor on the receiving end of an electronic message summed up the sentiments of Biden’s top aides: ‘They were aggressively saying that we would wind up with the vice-president and that would be a mistake,’” the book describes, according to The Guardian.
“It all sounded like a serial killer’s conspiracy theory,” the book states, with the authors quoting both internal thoughts and private discussions provided by “sources,” denoting them with italics.
“‘Donors want to scrap Biden so they can get his wannabe replacements – the governors, with power over state decisions – to beg them for cash,’ Biden aides argued. ‘This isn’t fucking Wall Street financiers versus Ivy League presidents. Our guy isn’t scared of your money. We have grassroots donors. We have the support of the voters. We have the nomination in hand. All you’re doing is fucking yourself and the president. We will remember this. Capisce?’“
The linchpin sealing the deal was the argument that scrapping Biden would leave the party with no other choice than to run Vice President Kamala Harris, whose poll numbers were abysmal.
“The last threat, the ace in the hole, was Kamala Harris,” Allen and Parnes write. “Even if Biden did drop out and you got your dreamed-up open convention, you would only succeed in nominating the vice-president. Is that what you want? You want her? Look at her polling. No one wants her. Forget it. It’s never gonna happen.”
The book also touches on Democrat leader and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s reaction as she watched Biden’s performance during the debate, describing how she “actually was worried … saying, ‘Oh my God, it’s going to be her.'”
In the end, of course, the aides’ mission was unsuccessful, as Biden on July 21 dropped out of the 2024 race and endorsed Harris; however, their predictions about America’s distaste for the VP proved correct, as she went on to lose all seven battleground swing states, the popular vote and the electoral college vote to Trump.
