In the eastern German state of Saxony, a Syrian migrant has been arrested for stabbing a man in front of a supermarket, sparking large-scale protests for such a small town.

Only 16,700 people live in Heidenau, but like many locations across Germany, it is no longer immune to knife attacks and extreme violence.

Police stated that a 24-year-old and 43-year-old man became engaged in an argument in front of the supermarket at Schneller-Straße at 6:50 p.m., when the 24-year-old Syrian pulled out a knife and stabbed the other man, resulting in serious injuries.

The Syrian appears to not be the only man involved in the attack either.

“When passersby intervened, another man came running with a baseball bat, but fled shortly afterwards in a Daewoo,” said police spokesman Marko Laske.

Police arrested the suspect shortly after the attack. His apparent accomplice who was armed with a baseball bat was also arrested, a 26-year-old Syrian, according to police.

The attack prompted a march from the small party “Free Saxony,” which is popular in the state but not active in any other state. They registered a demonstration on Tuesday, which managed to gather 300 participants despite the town’s small size.

The party wrote: “One day after a Syrian stabbed a man in Heidenau, causing a bloodbath, hundreds of citizens took to the streets. The banners of the White-Green Freedom Movement carry a clear message: We will not tolerate West German conditions in Saxon Switzerland. Our response is remigration, remigration by the millions!”

Saxon Switzerland is a region in Saxony known for its natural beauty.

Saxony is not only a stronghold of the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, but it is also highly opposed to mass immigration in general.

In a poll, known as the Saxony Monitor and conducted every year by the Saxon government, 64 percent are of the opinion that Germany is “dangerously infested with foreigners,” which is 24 percentage points more than two years ago.

It also found that 82 percent of residents of the state, which features Dresden as its capital, have little or no trust in the ruling left-liberal government, which represents a drop of 26 percent since the last poll conducted in 2022.

Meanwhile, the AfD has now become the most popular party in the country for the first time ever, overtaking the Christian Democrats and scoring 25 percent of the vote.
