The Biden administration’s open borders essentially allowed human traffickers to create a huge illegal underground child labor workforce right in the US, a filmmaker told CNBC.
Speaking to CNBC in 2024, United Capital Markets founder and film producer John Devaney agreed his film “City of Dreams” – depicting a soccer-loving Mexican boy who’s trafficked to the US and forced to work at a sweatshop – spotlights a “whole underground economy of children.”
“Some of it has to do with the policies of the border,” Devaney explained at the time, blaming the Biden administration but insisting his movie is apolitical.
“A lot of kids came to the border in suburbans from very poor countries like Guatemala. And the families
paid $3,000-$5,000 per kid. And they thought that these children could have a better life here in the United States,” he said, adding, “There were tens with hundreds of children.”
The film producer went on to describe how trafficking networks are gaming new rules in the foster care system, which allow children to be housed with “sponsors” instead of close relatives, and that “some
of the traffickers suggested the sponsor.”
“There’s homes in Florida and Texas with 15 to 20 kids all sleeping on the floor, not in school. And 15-passenger vans are picking up kids 15 at a time and they’re cleaning pig slaughterhouses and
doing the whole night shift.”
“And we’re allowing this all to happen under our noses here in the greatest country of the world in the United States.”
Contrary to the Biden administration, Trump officials have taken a tough stance on the issue, with FBI Director Kash Patel vowing to dismantle child trafficking networks during his confirmation hearing in January.
“Child sex trafficking has no place in the United States of America, and I will do everything if confirmed as FBI director to make sure the American public knows the full weight of what happened in the past, and how we are going to [counteract] missing children and exploited children going forward.”
