President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed an executive order aimed at preventing fraud and meddling in national elections, mandating proof of citizenship for voter registration and requiring all votes be cast and received by the end of Election Day.
The “PRESERVING AND PROTECTING THE INTEGRITY OF AMERICAN ELECTIONS” executive order mandates the Election Assistance Commission to ensure voter registration forms are updated to require “documentary proof of United States citizenship.”
“Despite pioneering self-government, the United States now fails to enforce basic and necessary election protections employed by modern, developed nations, as well as those still developing,” the order states, adding while countries like India and Brazil require biometric voter identification, the US “largely relies on self-attestation for citizenship.”
The order also directs the DHS secretary to ensure local and state officials have access to systems allowing them to determine a person’s legal resident status, mandates DHS and DOGE review each state’s voter registration rolls to ensure no illegal aliens are registered to vote, and empowers the US Attorney General “to assist with State-level review and prosecution of aliens unlawfully registered to vote or casting votes.”
“Maintaining accurate voter registration lists is a fundamental requirement in protecting voters from having their ballots voided or diluted by fraudulent votes,” the order reads.
Additionally, the EO underscores the need for a “uniform Election Day across the Nation for Federal elections,” and instructs the US Attorney General to “take all necessary action” against states that tabulate absentee or mail-in ballots after Election Day.
“[W]hile countries like Denmark and Sweden sensibly limit mail-in voting to those unable to vote in person and do not count late-arriving votes regardless of the date of postmark, many American elections now feature mass voting by mail, with many officials accepting ballots without postmarks or those received well after Election Day,” reads Trump’s order.
The safeguards are also intended to ensure foreign nationals or entities, including non-governmental organizations, are not influencing American elections by making illegal contributions to political campaigns.
The EO also calls for updated voting systems with enhanced security protocols that produce a voter-verifiable paper record, and for AG and state officials to strengthen efforts to prosecute election-related crimes.
“Free, fair, and honest elections unmarred by fraud, errors, or suspicion are fundamental to maintaining our constitutional Republic,” the order emphasizes, adding, “The right of American citizens to have their votes properly counted and tabulated, without illegal dilution, is vital to determining the rightful winner of an election.”
Presenting the order to Trump at a signing Tuesday, an aide commented, “We believe that this executive order is the farthest-reaching executive action ever taken in the history of the Republic to secure our elections.”
As expected, the liberal media isn’t taking news of the order too well, with The London Guardian claiming it will “upend” the voter registration process and saying it contains “measures so restrictive they could in effect disenfranchise millions of citizens if enacted,” while The Associated Press was also quick to claim Trump’s EO “is likely to face swift challenges from voting rights organizations.”
