Florida’s top-ranking Democrat announced he’s abandoning the Party, saying it no longer stands for the principles it once used to.
“Here’s the issue: The Democratic Party in Florida is dead. But there are good people that can resuscitate it. But they don’t want it to be me,” Senate Minority Leader Jason Pizzo declared Thursday in a floor speech, adding he’s switched his voter registration party affiliation to “no party.”
“The party that my dad volunteered for in JFK when he was 18-years-old and 1960 is not the party today,” Pizzo continued.
“It craves and screams anarchy and then demands amnesty. That’s not okay,” Pizzo said.
The now-Independent state senator went on to say he’s not beholden to the Democrat Party, but instead to constituents, saying they crave “practical leaders, not political hacks.”
“I am not in this position because of Democrats. I got elected because of NPAs [Not Politically Affiliated], the 3.7 million people who have no party, who have no representation,” Pizzo said.
“Stripping myself of a title of a party designation allows me to run free and clear, clean and transparent and help many, many more,” he added, suggesting a possible future political run.
The New York Post notes Pizzo’s floor speech arrived just one day after he was labeled “racist” by Democrats for opposing a bill addressing a water dispute in the Miami-Dade area.
The Florida Democrat Party (FDP) feigned delight in response to Pizzo’s resignation.
“Jason Pizzo is one of the most ineffective and unpopular Democratic leaders in recent memory, and his resignation is one of the best things to happen to the party in years,” replied FDP Chair Nikki Fried. “His legacy as leader includes continually disparaging the party base, starting fights with other members, and chasing his own personal ambitions at the expense of Democratic values.”
Fried also claimed Pizzo’s stunt was an attempt to bolster his standing among Republicans ahead of a potential run for the governor’s seat, a view shared by critics like Laura Loomer.
“Jason’s failure to build support within our party for a gubernatorial run has led to this final embarrassing temper tantrum. I’d be lying if I said I’m sad to see him go, but I wish him the best of luck in the political wilderness he’s created for himself,” Fried wrote, adding, “The Florida Democratic Party is more united without him.”
Pro-Trump conservative Laura Loomer noted, “Jason Pizzo is only switching sides to become an independent because he wants to run for Governor of Florida.”
“As I reported last year, Pizzo was in Palm Beach telling donors his plans to run for Governor last year. He recognizes fractures in the FL GOP and FL Dems. Smart move on his part, but totally planned and opportunistic,” Loomer wrote on X, adding, “He’ll likely announce his candidacy for Governor of Florida when the FL session ends. Perhaps June or July.”
Pizzo also indicated he has no intention to join the GOP, reportedly stating, “the Republican Party has a lot of problems.”
Nevertheless, the chairman of the Republican Party of Florida, Evan Power, took Pizzo’s resignation as a win, saying, “Senator Pizzo didn’t leave the Democratic Party; the party left him,” and that it “underscores the radicalization of today’s Democratic Party.”
