Poland continues its massive crackdown on the conservative opposition, with the latest targeting serving as Law and Justice (PiS) MP Dariusz Matecki. The Polish MP told the Sejm on Wednesday that he is waiving his parliamentary immunity and stressed that he is innocent, with his speech, in which he wore handcuffs and spoke English, being picked up and shared by large English-language accounts on X.

Earlier, the regulations committee on parliamentary and immunity affairs recommended lifting the MP’s immunity in connection with the investigation into the Justice Fund, reports wPolityce.

Dariusz Matecki announced his decision on Wednesday evening during the session of the Sejm, while considering the report of the Rules Committee. He also pulled out a board with images of Vladimir Putin, Donald Tusk, Alyaksandr Lukashenka and Adam Bodnar with the caption “Every dictatorship will fall” and gave a short speech in English. In it, he repeated his thesis about the innocence and political motivations of the ruling camp:

“This is a message from Poland to the free world, from a democracy that is falling. I stand before you in handcuffs in the Polish parliament. I’m an opposition MP, and they want to throw me in jail for nothing. This is not justice. This is a political attack. They silence the opposition, control the media, and use courts as weapons—just like they tried to do with President Trump. In Romania, they arrested a conservative candidate for president. In Hungary, they attacked Viktor Orbán because he defends his nation’s freedom.

“I waive my parliamentary immunity. This is a consequence of my views – a member of parliament should not be above a citizen,” he said, recalling that he had previously spoken out “for the abolition of parliamentary and judicial immunities.”

On X, Mario Nawfal, publicized Matecki’s speech, writing: “Polish opposition MP Matecki has been stripped of his immunity, with his arrest officially announced during the Sejm session. Justice Minister Adam Bodnar confirmed the arrest order, while PM Donald Tusk declared, “Matecki will sit.” In protest, Matecki handcuffed himself on the parliamentary podium and issued a stark warning to the free world:

Matecki noted that he was giving up his parliamentary immunity and stated that he was being prosecuted out of revenge against the opposition.

“I waive my parliamentary immunity. This is a consequence of my views – a member of parliament should not be above a citizen,” he said, recalling that he had previously spoken out “for the abolition of parliamentary and judicial immunities.”

“This is my honorary obligation to the citizens, despite the fact that I completely disagree with the accusations of the prosecutor’s office. I am an innocent man, and the accusations brought against me by the forcibly taken over prosecutor’s office on the personal order of Donald Tusk – who already at the first session of the Sejm shouted at me with hatred in his eyes that I would sit. This is only political revenge, an attempt to eliminate me from public life and to intimidate all those who dare to oppose Tusk’s power,” said Matecki.

The MP drew attention, among other things, to the political involvement of the prosecutor from Investigative Team No. 2 of the Polish Criminal Court, Dariusz Ślepokura, who had earlier that same day submitted a motion to the Rules Committee on Parliamentary Affairs and Immunity to lift his immunity. The MP assessed that his opponents were interested in a “political spectacle.”

“Today ,(Minister of Justice Adam) Bodnar said directly that I was to be arrested during the Sejm session,” he noted.

“This is not an investigation. This is a political execution in front of a million Poles. You want a handcuffed MP on TVN. Please do. Ladies and gentlemen, you have your own show. You will have a handcuffed MP on the Sejm’s rostrum,” said Matecki, handcuffing himself with the previously prepared handcuffs.

“Let this picture become a symbol of what Poland is heading towards today,” he added.

“Tusk’s government, paid by Biden Democrats, the German state and the Soros foundation, is destroying democracy,” he said.

Matecki also responded to the allegations made against him, listing the activities performed for the State Forests. He assessed those concerning the Justice Fund as “based on manipulation,” saying that “the Justice Fund operated according to clearly defined procedures,” he emphasized.

Finally, the MP paraphrased the words of one of Poland’s famed Cursed Soldiers, Romuald Rajs (anti-communist insurgent executed by Communists for executing Belarusian civilians)codename “Bury”:

“’I am Polish and Catholic and you are Moscow’ – and I would add – Berlin and Brussels dogs.”

After his speech, the MP submitted a statement on waiving his immunity. As informed by Deputy Speaker of the Sejm Dorota Niedziela, on Thursday it will be forwarded to the Rules Committee on Deputies’ Affairs and Immunity for a formal assessment of the waiver.

According to reports, the allegations against Matecki include being fictitiously employed at the Regional Directorate of the State Forests in Szczecin from 2020 to 2023 and defrauding state-owned companies of PLN 320,000 (€77,000).

The Sejm’s regulations committee on parliamentary and immunity affairs recommended on Wednesday that MP Matecki’s immunity be lifted and that the Sejm give its consent to his detention and temporary arrest. The motion was related to the investigation into the Justice Fund, as well as to MP Matecki’s employment at the State Forests Directorate in Szczecin. In total, the prosecutor’s office suspects the MP of committing six crimes punishable by up to 10 years of imprisonment.

After a nearly four-hour meeting, the chairman of the committee, Jarosław Urbaniak (KO), announced that the committee would submit to the Sejm a proposal to accept the prosecutor’s office’s motion to lift the MP’s immunity, detain him and temporarily arrest him.

Matecki is the same MP that Remix News recently covered after he went to the Polish-German border and investigated a major new migrant processing center that was built close to the Polish border.
