California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said he doesn’t believe males should play in female sports, a major departure from mainstream Democrats’ trans agenda.

Speaking to conservative influencer Charlie Kirk on his new podcast, “This is Gavin Newsom,” the Democrat governor said he’s aware males playing against females is “unfair,” but went on to claim the unfairness needs to be balanced with compassion for transgenders.

“Would you say no men in female sports?” Kirk asked him.

“Well, I think it’s an issue of fairness. I completely agree with you on that,” Newsom said. “It is an issue of fairness. It’s deeply unfair.”

Newsom next spun his remark, claiming he hasn’t yet figured out how to balance the transgender sports issue in a way that prevents the “vulnerable” from killing themselves.

“There’s also humility and grace … that these poor people are more likely to commit suicide, have anxiety and depression, and the way that people talk down to vulnerable communities is an issue that I have a hard time with as well,” he said.

“So both things I can hold in my hand. How can we address this issue with the kind of decency that I think you know is inherent in you, but not always expressed on the issue?”

The slippery politician’s carefully worded, two-faced answer putting him closer to the moderate side of the political aisle sparked speculation he could be laying the groundwork for a 2028 presidential bid.

“California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the most radical trans laws in the nation, but suddenly believes that it’s unfair to have transgender athletes in female sports,” wrote popular X account @EndWokeness, adding, “He’s running in 2028.”

Newsom’s response ruffled the feathers of Democrat Sen. Scott Wiener, who released a statement condemning him for siding with Kirk on the issue.

The governor’s response on transgenders in sports comes as President Donald Trump on Tuesday recognized high school volleyball player Payton McNabb during his joint congressional address, pointing out she “suffered traumatic brain injury” and partial paralyzation on her right side.

Elsewhere in the interview, the governor and Kirk discussed how he cleaned San Francisco for a visit from Chinese President Xi Jinping, the Democrat Party’s expulsion of some of its best people, like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Tulsi Gabbard, and how Newsom’s son is a fan of Kirk’s.
