Footage released by police shows the moments that led to cops shooting and killing a man, dubbed a “community leader” by the media, after he viciously assaulted an officer and stole a state trooper’s vehicle.

The incident unfolded April 4 as suspect Deshawn Dante Leeth, 30, was approached by an Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) officer following a single-car rollover crash near the Ohio-Pennsylvania state line.

While the officer approached Leeth as he walked along the shoulder of the highway, the man began assaulting the cop before turning and running back down the highway.

Leeth next turned around and again ran towards the state trooper, who at this point pulled out his taser in an attempt to subdue the threat.

However, Leeth was able to overpower the Ohio State Trooper, and stole his OSHP Dodge Charger leading police on a chase before causing another rollover crash in Beaver County, Pennsylvania.

MLIVE.com has more on the moments that led up to police shooting Leeth:

Pennsylvania State Police gave chase before stopping the car, which flipped and landed upside down in pull-off area on the turnpike.

When Pennsylvania troopers approached the car, an altercation ensued, during which the man was fatally shot, police said.

Media outlets and a fundraiser for the Michigan man described him as a “community leader” and a “Ypsilanti advocate.”

BlackEnterprise.com described Leeth’s advocacy work:

Leeth was known in his Ypsilanti neighborhood for his advocacy work. He founded the Underdawg Nation, a nonprofit dedicated to serving children impacted by community violence in Washtenaw County and beyond. According to its website, he founded the organization following his own release from prison to spark positive change in the community he once hurt with his own actions.

The Ohio State Trooper who initially made contact with Leeth and was subsequently attacked received praise for exhibiting remarkable restraint in the face of an otherwise violent attack, while others criticized him for not using lethal force to neutralize the threat.
