The U.S. and Russia are beginning to negotiate a rare earth minerals deal this week, according to the head of Russia’s sovereign wealth fund, Kirill Dmitriev.
“Rare earth metals are an important area of cooperation, and of course, we have started discussions on various rare earth metals and projects in Russia,” Dmitriev told the Izvestia newspaper.
The talks come after American President Donald Trump over the weekend said he was “angry” and “pissed off” at Russian President Vladimir Putin for criticizing the corrupt Ukrainian puppet leader Volodymyr Zelensky.
Trump pointed out that inflammatory remarks by Putin could set back the ongoing peace deal his administration is trying to work out between Russia and Ukraine.
The 45th and 47th President even threatened to impose secondary tariffs on Russia if he believed they ruined the peace talks.
“If Russia and I are unable to make a deal on stopping the bloodshed in Ukraine, and if I think it was Russia’s fault — which it might not be — but if I think it was Russia’s fault, I am going to put secondary tariffs on oil, on all oil coming out of Russia,” Trump told Meet The Press.
Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, Trump said of Putin: “I don’t think he’s going to go back on his word. You’re talking about Putin. I don’t think he’s going to go back on his word. I’ve known him for a long time. We’ve always gotten along well.”
Trump added, “Some of the things that he said over the last day or two, having to do with Zelensky because when he considers Zelensky not credible — he’s supposed to be making a deal with him, whether you like him or you don’t like him. So I wasn’t happy with that. But I think he’s going to be good.”
President Trump also said last week that the U.S. and Ukraine should soon be reaching a minerals deal, which would help his administration recoup some of the money it loaned the Zelensky government.
However, Zelensky said during a Friday press conference that he would not recognize U.S. military aid as loans.
“We are grateful for the support, but this is not a credit, and we will not allow it,” Zelensky stated.
Responding to Zelensky’s remark, Trump said, “He’s trying to back out of the rare earth deal,” warning, “And if he does that, he’s got some problems. Big, big problems… He wants to be a member of NATO. Well, he was never going to be a member of NATO. He understands that.”
After Trump said he was “pissed off” at Putin for potentially derailing the negotiations with Zelensky, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday that the Kremlin was continuing to build bilateral relations “which were badly damaged during the previous administration.”
Peskov also revealed, “And we are also working on the implementation of some ideas related to the Ukrainian settlement. This work is under way, but so far there are no specifics that we could or should tell you about. This is a time-consuming process, probably due to its complexity.”
