Spanish police have arrested a 37-year-old woman in Mostoles, near Madrid, for allegedly selling her newborn daughter for €2,000 to a couple undergoing fertility treatment.

Authorities said the woman later regretted the deal and demanded the child back. The couple, arrested in Cordoba along with two relatives, refused unless she returned the money—plus an additional €1,000 for expenses.

The investigation began after the woman reported the family for kidnapping. The baby is now in a child protection centre.

Police also revealed that her six other children were removed from her custody in 2022 due to neglect.

The case highlights growing global concerns about the commodification of children, echoing a 2023 report about a French brother and sister who used U.S. surrogacy to create a bizarre family structure in order to preserve a €2 million inheritance.
