On Thursday, President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social to congratulate his “friends” Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, Speaker Dustin Burrows, and state legislators for passing school choice legislation.
The president said he “strongly endorsed” the concept of school choice and that it’s “a gigantic victory for students and parents in the great state of Texas.”
“We will very soon be sending Education BACK TO ALL THE STATES, where it belongs,” he added. “It is our goal to bring Education in the United States to the highest level, one that it has never attained before. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
In addition to school choice, lawmakers in the Texas House voted to provide $1 billion in taxpayer money for education savings accounts, which families can use to pay for their children’s private school education.
$8 billion in public school funding was also passed by legislators on Thursday.
Under the new bill, private schools need to operate for a minimum of two years before joining the program, and the state’s yearly report must provide data on dropout, expulsion, and graduation rates for participating students with disabilities.
Governor Abbott released a statement about the bill’s passing, saying, “For the first time in Texas history, our state has passed a universal school choice bill out of both chambers in the Texas Legislature. This is an extraordinary victory for the thousands of parents who have advocated for more choices when it comes to the education of their children.”
He also wrote on 𝕏, “School choice will put parents in the driver’s seat of their children’s education.”
Hopefully the move will encourage other states to pass similar legislation enabling parents to send their kids to schools they deem adequate.
