President Donald Trump said tariffs against Mexico and Canada could go up in the future but said he paused them for now to help the countries to a “certain extent.”

In a wide-ranging interview on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures,” Trump explained that tariffs were a necessary mechanism to recoup money to the United States and disrupt the deadly fentanyl coming across the border.

“For years, globalists have been ripping off the United States. They’ve been taking money away from the United States, and all we’re doing is getting some of it back, and we’re going to treat our country fairly,” Trump said.

“This country has been ripped off from every nation in the world, every company in the world. We’ve been ripped off at levels never seen before, and what we’re going to do is get it back.”

Trump has imposed 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada, and 10% on foreign adversary China, but paused them until April 2nd and temporarily exempted most goods from Canada and Mexico covered under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

When asked if he expected the U.S. to experience a recession this year, Trump responded, “I hate to predict things like that.”

“There is a period of transition, because what we’re doing is very big. We’re bringing wealth back to America. That’s a big thing,” Trump said. “And there are always periods of — it takes a little time. It takes a little time. But I think it should be great for us. I mean, I think it should be great.”

“What I have to do is build a strong country,” the president continued. “You can’t really watch the stock market. If you look at China, they have a 100-year perspective. We go by quarters. And you can’t go by that. You have to do what’s right.”

Trump also discussed his bid to broker peace between Ukraine and Russia, the billions of dollars of fraud and waste uncovered by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) headed by Elon Musk, and much more.
