The White House is responding to China’s defiance to its Liberation Day tariffs by revealing a 104% tariff on Chinese goods set to go into effect at midnight Tuesday, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed.
“[President Trump] believes that China wants to make a deal with the United States. He believes China has to make a deal with the United States. It was a mistake for China to retaliate,” Leavitt told reporters at a press briefing.
“The president – when America is punched, he punches back harder. That’s why there will be 104% tariffs going into effect on China tonight at midnight,” she said, adding, “but the president believes that [Chinese President] Xi [Jinping] and China want to make a deal, they just don’t know how to get that started.”
After President Trump last Wednesday announced a retaliatory tariff of 34% against China, the Communist nation responded with a 34% tariff on imported American goods, as well as other restrictions, with China’s commerce ministry vowing to “fight to the end” in the trade war.
Elsewhere during the briefing, Leavitt noted President Trump had not mentioned a delay or an extension on his deadline, saying, “he expects that these tariffs are going to go into effect.”
“You said something very important in your question,” Leavitt told one reporter. “You said the president has captivated the attention of the world — absolutely he has, and it’s about time we have a president in the Oval Office who is putting the world on notice and is putting the American people first and again is using the leverage of the United States to negotiate.”
It remains to be seen how China will respond to the latest tariffs.
Leavitt also hinted Trump has a forthcoming massive discovery announcement by the DOGE team, which last week blew the whistle on a Dept. of Veterans Affairs contractor that was paid $380K for minor website maintenance.
